A children’s book illustrator is a professional artist creating visual narratives (illustrations) that accompany the written text. Simply put, we create visual content for children's books. I like to call us visual translators, as we often clarify the meaning for those kids who cannot read yet. We specialise in visual storytelling, interpret words, and bring characters to life.

Our job as a children’s book illustrator is to interpret the narrative, simplify complex ideas and maintain consistency throughout the book. The job demands an understanding of storytelling, composition, child development and visual communication.

What do children’s book illustrators actually do?

Children’s book illustrators have a very dynamic job. Have you pictured us drawing in PJs all day, researching cute animals, and endlessly scrolling Pinterest for more floral inspiration? You are not far from the truth. The tasks include interpreting the manuscript, creating characters and defining key visual moments. The illustrations must clarify dialogue, convey mood or portray events.

Children’s books are divided into various age ranges:

Board books (up to 3 years)

Picture books (3 to 6 years)

Chapter books (6 to 9 years)

Middle grade (9 to 12 years)

Young adult (12 to 18 years)

That means that each range requires a different visual approach. To design a magical visual world, we collaborate with editors, directors and authors.
